I made Toby
from from a GI Joe Torch figure, from a comic two-pack. His head came
from the same two-pack Crimson Gaurdsman that Jay'cyn's arms and legs
were taken from. His hands are from a Cobra Trooper, because the Torch
hands just weren't holding very securely.
Initial resulpting to the Torch body.
Torch uses the
same body as Gung Ho, and is molded completely shirtless. Both figures
come with removeable vests. The red paint I was testing for the shirt
is also visible here. The gun is an XM8, from Marauder's. I painted it up to
look like the guns I often draw Toby using, in the comic.
The gray splotches are Mr. Surfacer, that I used to smooth out where I
didn't get the Kneadatite on very smooth. This is probably the last
thing I'll use Mr. Surfacer on, since what I've got is solidifying on
me, and it's continued availabity here in the States is in question.

Better view of the XM8. For some reason the Polyscale paint I used for
the blue, is really soft, and rubs off way too easily. I've since
repainted, and given the gun a coat of flat clear. If that doesn't
work, I'll smear a thin coat of super glue over the rub areas.

What a difference paint makes. Toby's
signature faded blue jeans, and torn red T-shirt really make the figure
look and feel like Toby, even though the hair is still the wrong color.
He still has the Torch hands, neither of which would firmly grasp
either handle on the M60.

Fully kitted out. The sheath for the machete is made from
the same brown vinyl I used for Angel's gear. Like the XM8, the M60 and
the machete are from Marauder
"Gun Runners."
|
Everything's painted, now. Both leg inserts have their
final peices on them; a pistol holster on the right leg, and grenades
and XM8 magazines on the left.
Both the M60 and the XM8 now have slings on them. The M60 has an old
school two pooint single, and the XM8 has a simple single point sling.
The XM8's sling is attached to a removeable end cap. The real XM8 end
cap is used on the comapct carbine version of the gun, but it is a real
component. I can also put the original shoulder stock back on.
|
The grenades, ammo clips, and .45 pistol
are pieces from Marauder Inc.
The holster is made from very thin (.010" thick) sheet styrene. It's
basically just wrapped around the gun to get the shape, then glued to
leg insert piece. The magazines and grenades are glued in place, but
the pistol is removeable.
|
Told you, the pistol was removeable. :)
The machete was painted with Model Master Rust, then drybrushed with
Testors acrylic orange, then I sprayed with flat clear, before
drybrushing with silver. The handle is Model Master sand, with thinned
down black oil paint brushed on to give that old wood look. I sealed
the oil paint, by spraying flat clear on it, then I smeared the whle
thing with superglue, to protect the paint.

This shows the folding carry handle. Getting the last piece on that
keeps the handle from just pulling off, was really annoying to get
glued on. The handle itself is brass rod, with the grip part of the
original handle drilled out and glued in place.

Toby Miller
Machine
Gunner
Primary Weapon: M60E3 machine
gun
Secondary Weapon: XM8 automatic
rifle (modified)
Backup Weapon: M1911 .45 automatic
pistol
Other Weapons: Machete,
Fragmentation Grenades
Taken from drug using parents, and dropped into an abusive foster home,
Toby had been toughened to life's hardships by the time the
Technothropes invaded his world. When more sensible people were running
in fear, Toby grabbed the first thing he could find that would work as
a weapon. He's the first person on record to succesfully attack
Technothrope's with a dull rusty machete. He's not the first person to
use an old machete against Technothropes, just the first one to live to
tell the tale. Raridan recruited him, as soon as he heard about the
incident.
Being capable of firing an M60 machine gun on the move for extended
periods, he became the team's machine gunner. For close quarters work,
he perfers to use an XM8, with the shoulder stock removed. Ironicly, it
makes him the only member of the team to use an automatic rifle of that
small calibre.
